Petition: No rabbits as dinner!

May 28, 2015 IDA action alert

John Mackey - Co-CEO, Whole Foods Market, Inc.

As a supporter of In Defense of Animals (IDA), an international animal rights and welfare organization with more than 200,000 supporters, and a longtime Whole Foods customer, I urge you to immediately drop rabbit flesh from your stores.

It's coming up on the one-year anniversary of Whole Foods testing rabbit flesh in select markets. The test has failed due to low sales proving there is no real market for rabbit. It is also very disturbing that you continue to serve up the country's fifth largest companion animal and claim you are doing so humanely.

I have read about the latest USDA inspection whereby bunnies were living in horrific factory farmed conditions, left for dead, many without water, and dead rabbit was mislabeled as inspected before getting to your store. You have failed to meet your own basic humane standards and ethics.

As one of millions of shoppers who previously chose Whole Foods due to its variety of vegetarian and vegan options and product offerings that do not test on animals  including rabbits  your stance is disappointing. Sprouts has heard the word of its customers and dropped rabbit flesh from its shelves. Although I have enjoyed shopping at Whole Foods over the years, I will have no problem taking my business elsewhere for good. I urge you to make the right choice.
